June 6-8 Ottowa

Where there is a waterfall there is a lock . That is what we found on the canals.

Sure enough the bottom of the Ottawa River Rideau Canal we got here too late to enter. So we tied up at the wall and waited until the opening tomorrow at 8:30 am

Nicole, Jeremy and Dave were watching the sunset on the hill next to the lock..They work for a corporate video production firm.

The sunsets are worth the wait.

Looking across the Ottawa River to Gatineau, Quebec.

The Gear to open the doors of the lock

At 8:30 AM we entered the lock with Mike and Daniel. They were making a DVD of the Canal systems. Mike is a TV host for Lifestyle. On Saturday mornings you may have seen his program on ESPN Motor boating. Daniel is the Editor of a Canadian Yachting Magazine.

Don Coulbome is the photographer. We may be in the DVD on the Rideau, but after the producer , a dog lover, does the editing of the hours of tape it might just be Cutter.
The lock chambers allow the water to rise to the very top.

Jeff, the lock master watching the water rising

Inside the lock chamber, John is waiting holding the lines.

It is fun the first few dozen locks, then it becomes boring.
People cross the bridge as the water rises or falls

We toured the walking city of old Ottawa, finally found the pastry shop .
WE were going to buy all of our friends back in the US a cookie, but couldn't support the cause.
I guess we will never know how the pastries were
Flower vendors were everywhere along the walking streetWe found a wine bar with free cheese during happy hour. Of course, Ice Cream stores are everywhere.
Yes we did fit under that bridge, do you see the ducks?

Another perfect ending to a perfect day.

The Rideau Canal certainly is an amazing feat of Canadian engineering, and a great place to visit. There is more information on this at Canada's Got Treasures, which is also a space where you can share your images and videos with the rest of Canada.
